This presentation will demonstrate how coded words and emojis are being used to evade detection of various activities across social media platforms. The activities include: drug trafficking, sex trafficking, gang affiliation and mental/emotional health, threats, and bullying.

Our Presenter, Sophia Kwong, began her career in law enforcement in 2006 as a student Border Services Officer with Canada Border Services Agency. After completing degrees in Criminology, Anthropology, and Archaeology in 2009, Sophia began working with the RCMP, where she has held positions both in operational units and human resources.

Sophia has been working in the field of open source intelligence (OSINT) for over eight years. As a Criminal Intelligence Information Researcher with the Real Time Intelligence Centre (RTIC-BC), she used open source practices to help bring actionable intelligence to front-line members in real time.  As an Open Source Intelligence Analyst with the Federal Serious Organized Crime (FSOC) Major Project Section, Sophia used open source information to provide investigators with possible new avenues of investigation on files primarily related to drugs and transnational organized crime.

Sophia is also a recurrent guest instructor on the Internet for Investigators course at the Pacific Region Training Centre, where she provides training for analysts and investigators on how to safely use the Internet as a research and intelligence tool to help facilitate investigations, how to understand legislation/policy/authorities as they
relate to capturing and using open source information for law enforcement purposes, how to mitigate online risk, and best practices.
